 The beginnings of organized fire protection on the territory of the Republic of Macedonia is dating from the first half of XVIII century. After the disastrous fire of Bitola Bazaar, with the charter of the Rumeli governor on May 20, 1836, Macedonia established paid services to extinguish fires. This Day – May 20, following the proposal of the Fire Protection union of Macedonia, today is celebrated as a day of fire protection in Macedonia.

In the period from 1944 to 1948 fire safety was the responsibility of the national army. In March 1951, the former Yugoslavia, adopted a law on volunteer fire companies and the same year, on an initiative of the Ministry of Interior, held a Founding Assembly of the Fire Protection Union of Macedonia.

Today, within Fire Protection Union of Macedonia there are 98 volunteer fire companies, organized in 39 municipal fire unions (RFPU), and according to the latest census of their membership comprise 2 600 volunteers.

Article 8, paragraph first of the Statute of Fire Protection Union of Macedonia:
„Union implements measures and activities to prevent the occurrence of fires, extinguish fires and rescue people, property and values threatened by fires, natural disasters and other catastrophes.“
